Rotarians and Students Make a Splash! Project Genki Hou is a clean water initiative led by East Hawai'l Rotary Clubs and Kua O Ka La Charter School utilizing genki balls to treat Waihonu Pond located at Liliu'okalani Park in Hilo. Rotary Club of Hilo, Rotary Club of South Hilo, and the Rotary Club of Pahoa coordinated the year-long project with the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay, the Rotary Club of Volcano and other community organizations for this pilot project, which is patterned after the Ala Wai canal project utilizing the same protocols. Genki Balls utilize microorganisms to remediate sludge and bacteria which create harmful gases such as methane, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. Over 6,000 balls were made using sifted sludge, rice bran, molasses and effective microorganisms. The balls must dry for a minimum of 2 weeks to allow the microorganisms to inoculate and activate before they are tossed in the water. The treated waters become clean and balance is restored allowing fish to thrive again. Pre and post water quality testing is being conducted by UH-Hilo for project efficacy. This is an opportunity for the community to contribute to Aloha 'aina in a deep and meaningful way. The project has also engaged and taught the charter school teachers and students to ensure that this knowledge will be passed on to future generations. Mahalo to the County of Hawai'i, UH-Hilo, Friends of Liliu'okalani Park, Ho'oulu La Hui, EM Hawai'i, and local Rotary Clubs for embracing and funding this important initiative.
