KA HUIKOA Hawaii Island Veterans Memorial Inc. December 13, 2020 On behalf of our organization and all our island military veterans, the board of directors of Hawai'i Island Veterans Memorial Inc. (HIVM) wishes to express our heart-felt gratitude and appreciation to outgoing Mayor, Harry Kim, for his decades of unfailing and dedicated service to our island and its residents, and especially to our military veterans and their families. Thanks largely to Mayor Kim's assistance and steady support over three terms in office, HIVM, a nonprofit all-volunteer corporation, obtained 5.6 acres of state land along Kawili street in Hilo and was able to design and develop a senior independent living community consisting of a community center and 92 affordable rental apartments for elderly veterans, their spouses and other income-eligible island seniors. Our developer-operator expects to break ground on this project sometime in the new year. Mayor Kim was also instrumental in helping us obtain 2+ acres of additional adjacent public lands, for which we designed and developed a one-stop combined veterans medical outpatient clinic and service center. That project is also now shovel-ready and is awaiting release of a Request for Proposal (RFP) from the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Together, these two separate capital projects are valued in excess of $48M, will be constructed by local firms, and will contribute to diversifying our economy ... all thanks to Harry's interest, support, and assistance when it was needed. Apart from being grateful to him, we veterans are proud to call him one of us and to recognize him as the outstanding leader he has been throughout his adult life. Harry Kim no ka oi! Aloha 'oe, Harry. For the Board: Bob Williams Chairman Emeritus KA HUIKOA Hawaii Island Veterans Memorial Inc.
